INFLUENZA INFORMATION

Influenza, commonly known as “the flu,” is a highly contagious viral infection of the respiratory tract.  The illness has its own season – from November to April, with most cases occurring between late December and early March.  The flu is often confused with the common cold, but flu symptoms are usually more severe than the typical sneezing and stuffiness of a cold.  Symptoms of the flu may include:
  • Fever (although not everyone with flu has a fever)
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Body aches
  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Tiredness
  • Sometimes diarrhea and vomiting
When you call the absentee line to report your child’s absence, please state why the student is absent (ie. sore throat, cough, fever, vomiting, diarrhea).  This information helps us track of influenza like illnesses.
How can we prevent the spread of flu?  Flu viruses are thought to spread mainly from person to person through coughs and sneezes of infected individuals. People may also become infected by touching something with flu virus on it and then touching their mouth, nose, or eyes.

  • The single best way to protect against the flu is to get vaccinated each year.  Vaccination is recommended for everyone 6 months and older.  Please talk with your child’s pediatrician or visit any pharmacy clinics like Rite Aid, or CVS.
  • In order to prevent the spread of flu, please keep students with influenza like symptoms home at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit or 37.8 degrees Celsius, measured by mouth) or signs of a fever (chills, feeling very warm, flushed appearance, or sweating) without the use of fever-reducing medicine.
  • Encourage hand hygiene among students and staff.
